Details: This condensed and practical workshop aims at introducing fundamental knowledge for information visualisation and visual storytelling. Working with personal data, and using sketching as a tool to rapid prototype visual displays of information, the training will ultimately illuminate the power of data, big and small. The main goal is to provide participants with the necessary vocabulary to describe visualizations in a way that helps them reason about design appropriateness for a given problem. The workshop also includes a broad overview of the field, with a strong focus on visual literacy and cognitive perception – learning how to maximize the visual display for impact and memorability.

About the Instructor: 

Valentina D'Efilippo is an independent data designer and creative director. Her work has won many recognitions and awards and has been exhibited at the Weltmuseum Wien in Austria and other prestigious venues around the world. Her unique blend of creativity, storytelling, and data-driven insights has led her to collaborate with public organizations, start-ups, agencies, and global brands across a wide range of fields and formats – including theater productions, exhibitions, editorial content, and interactive platforms. Her critically acclaimed book, The Infographic History of the World, co-authored with data journalist James Ball, has been translated into eleven languages and she is also the co-author and illustrator of the upcoming Britannica’s Encyclopedia Infographica, released in autumn 2023. Valentina is a leading voice in the field of data visualization and information design and she is regularly invited to speak at conferences and events around the world. She also enjoys teaching and coaching corporate teams and lecturing at universities.
